"Penetration
and the receiving of semen hold vastly different meanings in diverse cultures"
[Herdt,
1991: Guardian of the Flutes](Rofes,
1996: 166). Also noted is the Dhat Syndrome in Northern India...
"AIDS educators who have underestimated the powerful meanings of anal sex,
oral sex, and semen exchange to significant numbers of gay men may have
imperiled the effectiveness of their efforts"
(Rofes,
1996: 166-7).
[Frank
Ruggero: My seed is in you] "One part of my love of sex is swallowing cum.
I feel as though the person - their seed - is inside of me, even though
I'm not going to have a baby. It's valuable. I don't know if it's tribal,
ancient, or what, but I think it's important to be able to drink another
man and have him drink you. My very first lover fucked me, and as he was
coming, he said, 'My seed in in you for eternity.' I felt warmth when he
said that, and when I fucked him, I said the same thing" [Rofes, 1996:
147] (Johnston,
1995: 212).
[Phone
Sex:] "Something in the words, in his description of 'needing sperm' and
'needing to know you're in me without anything between us," is highly charged
for both of us... I have talked to other men through phone sex lines who
have also eroticized unprotected anal sex... (Rofes,
1996: 169- 70).
"The
Language of Love: Other reasons for experiencing difficulty in making changes
can lie in the emotional meaning that certain sexual acts have... 'When
he sucks, he insists that his partner come in his mouth: 'If you don't
swallow it, you haven't given him anything' ...[Abstract] ...safer sex
is often experienced as emotionally colder, as expressions of distrust,
and as a reminder of death. To receive the semen is traditionally valued
as a commitment to the partner"
(Prieur,
1990: 109, 113).
"Some
[Boston FTM] participants felt that having male energy was as important
to their transition as having a male body. Semen had significant value
as a source of male energy and nourishment. [17: Herdt G. (1981)
Guardians of the Flutes: Idioms in Masculinity. McGraw-Hill: New
York. Herdt writes about the Sambia tribe in New Guinea in which
young boys ingest the semen of older males to acquire male sexual
energy and power" (Hein
and Kirk, 1999).
"It
is sort of a complete giving of yourself to that person, when you're totally
exposed. I think that's one issue that's never been really addressed by
the gay community. And it's like a spiritual dimension, like Catholicism,
if you don't have, like, risky sex. If you don't have that semen get in
there, it's not even considered genuine. It's not considered integrated"
(Rofes,
1996: 147).
By
accepting sexphobic and homophobic attitudes toward anal sex without challenges,
prevention efforts in the 1990s reinforce judgments of gay men and devalue
acts considered by many to be sacred (Rofes,
1996: 161). [Sacred = Profane? Same act, opposite meaning! Is the
understand of anything possible when we begin to use words in this way?
So what does word "sacred" mean?]
"Cocksucking
is a sacrement" (Well known Canadian Gay Community Figure, 2000).
