The national survey by the Pew Research Center, conducted May 1-5 among 1,504 adults, finds that support for same-sex marriage continues to grow: For the first time in Pew Research Center polling, just over half (51%) of Americans favor allowing gays and lesbians to marry legally. Yet the issue remains divisive, with 42% saying they oppose legalizing gay marriage. Opposition to gay marriage – and to societal acceptance of homosexuality more generally – is rooted in religious attitudes, such as the belief that engaging in homosexual behavior is a sin.

Bauermeister JA, Johns MM, Sandfort TG, Eisenberg A, Grossman AH, D'Augelli AR (2010). Relationship trajectories and psychological well-being among sexual minority youth. Journal of Youth and Adolescence, 39(10): 1148-63. PDF Download. Dating in adolescence plays an integral part in the development of sexual and social identities. This process is particularly salient for sexual minority youth who face additional obstacles to their identity formation due to their marginalized status. We investigated the influence of participating in a same-sex relationship (SSR) or an opposite-sex relationship (OSR) on sexual minority youths' psychological well-being (i.e., symptoms of depression, anxiety and internalized homophobia, and self-esteem) in an ethnically-diverse sample of 350 youth (55% male) between the ages of 15-19 years, recruited from three GLBT drop-in centers in the New York City area. Using longitudinal data, we examined youths' SSR and OSR over time. Multivariate regression analyses suggest that involvement in a SSR was positively associated with changes in self-esteem in males, and negatively correlated with changes in internalized homophobia in females. We discuss the implications for positive development in sexual minority adolescent populations.

You know, traditional French marriage.”

Hollekim A, Slaatten H, Anderssen N (2012)A Nationwide Study of Norwegian Beliefs About Same-sex Marriage and Lesbian and Gay Parenthood. Sexuality Research and Social Policy, 9(1): 15-30. PDF Download. A sample of 1,246 Norwegians participated in the study by filling out a questionnaire. The majority reported that they were supportive of equal marriage rights for lesbian, gay and heterosexual couples, whilst there was less support for granting gay and lesbian couples equal right to become parents. The negative attitudes towards equal parenting rights for lesbian, gay and heterosexual couples were explained mainly by concerns about the welfare of children growing up with gay and lesbian parents.

Registered partnerships: A new family type At present, the issue of granting legal recognition to same-sex couples is high on the political agenda in a large number of countries. In places where such a family type is not recognized, the debate tends to be intensifying. In many countries in Europe, it is already well established, and the discussion then more often concerns various amendments to existing rules. The first country at all to introduce a legal recognition of same-sex unions was Denmark in 1989, and the term “registered partnership” was invented for that purpose. In all Nordic countries, same-sex couples today have the possibility to contract a registered partnership, a civil status that in practice is not much short of a marriage. Such a family type was in the second place introduced in Norway in 1993, subsequently in Sweden in 1995, Iceland in 1996, and, finally, in Finland in 2002. By 2003, same-sex unions had been given legal recognition in one form or another also in Germany, France, Hungary, Portugal, Belgium, and the Netherlands1. In 2001, the latter country became the first in the world to amend its marriage act to give couples of the same sex admission to marry in the same manner as opposite-sex couples.

Jordal, Christian Edward (2011). “Making it Work”: A Grounded Theory of How Mixed Orientation Married Couples Commit, Sexually Identify, and Gender Themselves. PhD Dissertation, Marriage and Family Therapy program, Faculty of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. PDF Download. Download Page. Married bisexuals who come out to their heterosexual partners do not invariably divorce. This qualitative study included 14 intact, mixed orientation married couples. The mean marriage duration was 14.5 years, and the mean time since the bisexual spouse had come out was 7.9 years. The research focused the negotiation processes around three constructs: (a) sexual identity; (b) gender identity; and (c) marital commitment. Dyadic interviews were used to generate a grounded theory of the identity and commitment negotiation processes occurring among intact mixed orientation married couples. The findings revealed two sexual identity trajectories: Bisexuals who identify before marriage and reemerge within marriage; or bisexuals who do not identity before marriage but who emerge from within marriage. Two gender identity processes were reported: gender non-conformity and deliberate gender conformity. Finally, two negotiation processes around marital commitment were found: (a) closed marital commitment, and (b) open marital commitment. Closed marital commitment was defined as monogamous. Open marital commitment had four subtypes: (a) monogamous with the option to open; (b) open on one side (i.e., the bisexual spouse was or had the option to establish a tertiary relationship outside the marriage); (c) open on both sides or polyamorous; and (d) third-person inclusive (i.e.. couples had or were seeking a third person to bring into their marriage for both spouses). The implications for research and clinical practice were discussed.

The effect of marriage on lesbians' mental health, physical health, and quality of life (2011): Subjects ( N = 200) were recruited via the Internet. A cross-sectional, Internet-based survey was conducted. The social support and psychosocial models served as the theoretical frameworks in this investigation. Analyses using ANCOVA found that QOL was higher for married lesbians vs. lesbians in committed relationships. Socially, marriage equality in the form of state marriage laws, and federal benefits and protections for lesbian couples and their families, could serve public health interests and promote positive social change. Positive social change could also be promoted by the reduction of stigma, stereotypes, discrimination, and oppression of sexual minorities in the areas of access to health care, the judicial system, and religious institutions.

Example of health researchers ignoring sexual and gender minority issues (2014): To the Editor: We have great concerns about the article “Marital Status and Survival in Patients With Cancer” by Aizer et al. and the associated editorial by Kissane, which further discusses the finding that marriage has a protective effect, whereas the unmarried have a significantly higher risk of late cancer diagnosis, undertreatment, and cancer death. We believe that omitting a discussion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) populations from both the article and editorial is an oversight that is troubling for a host of reasons. Despite a failure to dedicate resources and funding, at least federal and nonfederal agencies, including the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society, acknowledge the existence of cancer disparities as a result of sexual orientation. More importantly, despite the lack of dedicated resources to examine these disparities, population-based research shows that gay men have a higher prevalence of cancer histories, lesbian and bisexual women with cancer report worse quality of life compared with their heterosexual peers, and women in same-sex relationships have greater risk for breast cancer–related mortality than women in opposite-sex relationships. Therefore, at a minimum, the article and the editorial should have discussed the fact that LGBT populations are likely overrepresented in their study, carrying a greater cancer burden...

No Sex, Please, We’re Gay Teens:... The GLBT movement is seriously failing queer young people in matters of sex.... Young queer people today are growing up in a world where gay and mainstream culture give them mixed signals about sexuality and sexual behavior. The two historical circumstances that made growing up gay so unique for those born in the mid-1980s and after—the fight for marriage equality and the AIDS epidemic—are also making it almost impossible to have informed, healthy, and sane discussions about sexual desire and sexual activity. That’s because in recent years the clanging of wedding bells and the insistent bad news about HIV transmission (much of it fueled by anti-gay hysteria in the mainstream media) has distorted how the gay and lesbian community talks about sex. Over the past five years, safe sex education, seen from the mostly gay-run AIDS non-profits, has shifted from promoting healthy sexuality and sexual behavior to the “be afraid to have sex” scare tactics of the 1980s. Moreover, the fight for marriage equality—and the elevation of marriage as the idealized pinnacle of appropriate and healthy homosexuality—has moved front and center in gay politics and, to a large degree, in the imaginations of young gay people, much to their detriment...  In almost all the community discussion of marriage equality, the word “sex”—even the idea of “sex”—is glaringly absent...  The connection between AIDS and marriage here is not incidental or accidental. When the AIDS epidemic exploded, one of the first responses to it, both within and outside the queer community, was to urge gay men to stop having sex and to enter into monogamous relationships. Even after the specifics of AIDS transmission became known, much AIDS education focused on curtailing sexual experience altogether. For many gay male commentators, such as Larry Kramer, Bruce Bawer, and Gabriel Rotello, the curtailment of sexual activity was the only “cure” for the AIDS epidemic. ..  Most of us—excluding a significant part of the religious right, which favors abstinence-only sex- ed—know that people get better at sex not only by having a range of sexual experiences, often with different people, but also by thinking and talking about sex. That is the conversation that gay men and lesbians as a community are not having and that is being stifled by the power and the enormous consequence that the same-sex marriage debate—drained of sex—has assumed in our politics and lives.

The bottom line is that this is bad science, it is not about same-sex or gay parenting, and strong but circumstantial evidence suggests its main reason for being is to provide ammunition to right-wing activists against LGBT rights. PDF Download. The purpose of this article is to propose a three-step model to help heterosexual therapists become more aware of the influence of their own heteronormative assumptions, heterosexual privileges, and heterosexual identities on the therapy process. This article also provides definitions of concepts central to the practice of affirmative therapy with lesbian, gay, and bisexual clients and strategies that therapists and clients can use to deconstruct heterosexism in the context of therapy.

Sullins D Paul (2015). Emotional Problems among Children with Same-sex Parents: Difference by Definition. British Journal of Education, Society & Behavioural Science, 7(2). PDF Download.  Using a representative sample of 207,007 children, including 512 with same-sex parents, from the U.S. National Health Interview Survey, prevalence in the two groups was compared for twelve measures of emotional problems, developmental problems, and affiliated service and treatment usage, with controls for age, sex, and race of child and parent education and income. Instruments included the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and the Kessler Scale of Psychological Distress (SPD). Bivariate logistic regression models tested the effect of parent psychological distress, family instability, child peer stigmatization and biological parentage, both overall and by opposite-sex family structure... Emotional problems were over twice as prevalent (minimum risk ratio (RR) 2.4, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.7-3.0) for children with same-sex parents than for children with opposite-sex parents. Risk was elevated in the presence of parent psychological distress (RR 2.7, CI 1.8-4.3, p (t) < .001), moderated by family instability (RR 1.3, CI 1.2-1.4) and unaffected by stigmatization (RR 2.4, CI 1.4-4.2), though these all had significant direct effects on emotional problems. However, biological parentage nullified risk alone and in combination with any iteration of factors. Joint biological parents are associated with the lowest rate of child emotional problems by a factor of 4 relative to same-sex parents, accounting for the bulk of the overall same-sex/opposite-sex difference... Joint biological parentage, the modal condition for opposite-sex parents but not possible for same-sex parents, sharply differentiates between the two groups on child emotional problem outcomes. The two groups are different by definition. Intact opposite-sex marriage ensures children of the persistent presence of their joint biological parents; same-sex marriage ensures the opposite. However, further work is needed to determine the mechanisms involved.

Biblarz TJ, Savci (2010). Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Families. Journal of Marriage and Family, 72(3): 480–497. PDF Download. Abstract. This article reviews new scholarship on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender families. The past decade witnessed rapid expansion of data and strong research designs. The most notable advance was in studies on variation among mostly planned lesbian comother families. Cumulative evidence suggests that although many of these families have comparatively high levels of shared labor and parental investment, they may not be as “genderless” as previously depicted. Gay men's diverse paths to family formation and planned parenthood have also been explored, but almost no research studies their children's experiences. Conceptualizations of sexual orientation expanded to include bisexuals and others, and some understanding of the experiences of transgender people has begun to emerge. Future work should explore relationships among members of the families they create.

Trans-Racial Queer Families by Arlene (Ari) Istar Lev . "Even after 25 years of anti-racism activism, I did not realize how much white privilege I had until it was revoked. I had lived By my rather queer life in a mixed race and alternative Jewish community, and many of my close friends were parents. I naively thought that within the confines of my alternative lifestyle my family would be bell-curve normatively queer. I was not prepared for the multiple levels of issues that trans-racial queer adoption would raise, even for the most progressive of my friends." Excerpt continues at lesbianation.com. Domestic Violence in LGBT Communities: "Domestic violence occurs in all types of relationships regardless of race, national origin, sexual orientation, or socio-economic status... Special Issues in LGBT Domestic Violence: "Many aspects of LGBT domestic violence are similar to those experienced by heterosexual victims. However, perpetrators in LGBT relationships often attempt highly specific forms of abuse based on identity and community dynamics, including:..." - LGBTQ Domestic Violence: Technical Assistance & Training Project: Effective Case Management with LGBTQ DV Victims/Survivors (PPT Presentation).

Trans and Intersex Survivors of Domestic Violence: Defining Terms, Barriers, & Responsibilities (2000/2001, Alternate Link): Clearly, trans and intersex survivors exist. Like other domestic violence survivors, they need the help of service agencies, including shelters, to free themselves from abusive partners and to learn to recognize future abusive relationships before the abuse becomes extreme. Unfortunately, few ever manage to access these services openly. There are many reasons why so few trans and intersex survivors are served by the community that typically aids and advocates for survivors of domestic violence.

Poon, Maurice Kwong-Lai (2010). The social construction of gay male partner abuse: Power, discourse and lived experience. PhD Dissertation, Social Work, University of Toronto. PDF Download. Download Page. Three focus groups, with 16 service providers, were conducted to examine the discursive effects of partner abuse on clinical practice. In-depth interviews with 21 gay men involved in partner abuse were conducted to understand their lived experience. Transcripts of the focus groups and interviews were reviewed in detail to highlight themes and concepts. Analysis revealed that gay male partner abuse is not a self-evident or natural category but, rather, socially constructed. Current discourse created two opposite categories (the victim who is powerless and helpless; the perpetrator powerful and evil) that both informed and limited the way in which service providers saw and, thus, worked with gay men involved in partner abuse. Yet, as shown in the analysis, the lived experience of partner abuse does not always fit neatly into the rigid victim and perpetrator roles. Instead, the roles are frequently unclear and contradictory. We social workers need to be aware of the discursive effects of gay male partner abuse and critically examine how they impose certain assumptions on us. Instead of seeking a “true” experience of partner abuse, we need to help these men search for meaning within the events that are relevant to them, regardless of how they fit into the normative discourse of gay male partner abuse.

Gaytan N, Goode Maralá (2011). Latina Portrait: Domestic Violence and Latinas. Chicago: Mujeres Latinas en Acción. PDF Download. Domestic violence is a destructive force in the lives of many Chicago Latinas, its negative effects rippling throughout the community. This article provides a portrait of the challenges many Latinas confront on a national and local level in relation to intimate partner violence. The study and subsequent recommendations are based on a literature review, an analysis of interviews with a total of 14 providers, and more than three decades of experience of Mujeres Latinas en Acción in working with battered Latinas.

Activists try to stem gay domestic abuse: "One reason the gay community balks at confronting abuse among its own members is that gays already face special problems such as HIV and discrimination, says Letellier. Publicizing abuse, he says, would be "airing dirty laundry."- San Francisco grapples with gay domestic violence: "They feel embarrassed and ashamed in airing any more dirty laundry to any enemies that would undermine what we already have." - The gay community's dirty secret - domestic violence - is finally coming out of the closet: "What about resistance from the gay and lesbian community who don't want their dirty laundry aired in public?  Definitely. Straight battered women have tremendous shame and denial, and the same thing is felt on a community-wide basis for gay people. Added to that is the sense of not wanting to increase the negative attention and attacks and pressure the gay community already feels itself under from the outside." - Patrick Letellier: Bringing Gay Domestic Abuse Out of the Closet. - Letting Out the Secret: Violence in Lesbian Relationships

Community leaders ave stated there is "no problem" while correspondingly and not surprisingly support services remain virtually non-existent." - Survey Finds Homosexuals Rarely Report Domestic Violence. - Domestic Violence in Puerto Rican Gay Male Couples. - Domestic violence and sexual coercion: HIV risk among Puerto Rican gay males.

Mehrotra G, Munshi S (2011). Shifting the Frame: Addressing Domestic Violence in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer South Asian Communities. Manavi Occasional Paper No. 7. PDF Download. However, from experiences of service providers, domestic violence advocates, activists, and community members, we know that domestic violence is an issue within all LGBTQ communities, including amongst queer South Asians. Many of the same factors and dynamics that impact experiences of domestic violence within heterosexual relationships in the South Asian community also affect LGBTQ South Asians. In addition, the larger context of multiple and particular oppressions such as homophobia, heterosexism, genderism, and transphobia impact both what the abuse looks like and the barriers and challenges that LGBTQ South Asians may face in seeking safety, support, and/or services... The larger social context of homophobia, heterosexism, and transphobia mean that South Asian LGBTQ people often have to fight for the legitimacy of our relationships and identities. Further, since these identities and relationships can be viewed as inherently abnormal or wrong, it can be particularly difficult to acknowledge that violence may be occurring within these relationships.
