Robinson, Matthew P (2000). Unspoken Assumptions: A Cross-Cultural Examination of Sexual Abiguity. Lambda Alpha Journal, 30, 28-41. PDF Download. This paper focuses on the issue of "sexually ambiguous" individuals - that is, those who exhibit traits that are neither exclusively female nor male - and the problems associated with their existence within a sexually dimorphic cultural context. It examines studies that investigate various innovations in Sambian, Indian, Navajo, Omani, and Samoan cultures that actively incorporate sexual ambiguity into their respective social and cultural systems. Specifically, it describes the nature of the social interactions, cultural significance, and adaptive strategies of these groups in relation to the respective cultural frameworks within which they exist. Looking at cultures whose constructions of sexuality acknowledge (and therefore legitimize) the existence of sexual ambiguity with the incorporation of a third sex class, this paper also discusses alternatives to the binary Western model of human sexuality... With many heated debates currently surrounding Western social policy issues such as civil rights protections for sexually diverse peoples, samesex marriages, and demographic reporting techniques such as the United States Census, the study of sexual ambiguity is especially relevant. Considering alternative models of sexual identity and classification provides us the opportunities to reconsider the implications of differential treatment towards sexually ambiguous and divergent peoples in Western society, to reevaluate and potentially redefine Western cultural assumptions about sexual "normalcy" and "deviance," and to renew our commitment to embracing human diversity.
The binary gender: a constructed phenomenon N/A. - What’s the big deal about gender? – Female Identity as Intersex (2010): A U.N. report by Finnish international law professor and United Nations Special Rapporteur, Martin Scheinin, says, “gender is not synonymous with women, and, instead, encompasses the social constructions that underlie how women’s and men’s roles, functions and responsibilities, including in relation to sexual orientation and gender identity, are understood.” The report stresses “gender is not static; it is changeable over time and across contexts.” - New UN Report Pushes Gender as a Social Construct not Based in Nature (2009). - IWF in the News: UN Report Says 'Gender Is Not Static, It Is Changeable'. - The Report: Protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms while countering terrorism. - Transgender People Face Violence, Obstacles (2007).

perform "women's work"? What is "women's work"? "Men's work"? Are words
such as transgender, transsexual, transvestite, hermaphrodite and
accurate descriptions of who we are? Or are they just convenient (or in
some cases, derogatory) categories for containing the unknown?" -

everyone's a little bit of both. - Intersex: The space between the genders (2007):
The West defines gender in two distinct categories. But gender may be a
spectrum. Why does society, and even science, struggle to understand
and accept those who are somewhere between male and female?
Undoing Gender (Deutsch, 2007): "Doing Gender," the groundbreaking article by Candace West and Don Zimmerman, appeared in the first issue of Gender & Society in 1987. Arguably one of the most important writings in the contemporary study of gender, "Doing Gender" has been cited 634 times, including 60 times in 2005 alone ... West and Zimmerman argued that gender is not something we are, but something we do. Gender must be continually socially reconstructed in light of "normative conceptions" of men and women. People act with the awareness that they will be judged according to what is deemed appropriate feminine or masculine behavior. These normative conceptions of men and women vary across time, ethnic group, and social situation, but the opportunity to behave as manly men or womanly women is ubiquitous. Thus, gender is an ongoing emergent aspect of social interaction... - An evolutionary perspective of sex-typed toy preferences: pink, blue, and the brain (2003). - Was pink originally the color for boys and blue for girls? (2008). - Learning gender in primary school playgrounds: findings from the Tomboy Identities study (2006).
"Doing Gender": The impact and future of a salient sociological concept (Messerschmidt, 2009): "Doing Gender" was one of the conceptual breakthroughs that compellingly responded to this theoretical impasse and considerably influenced feminist theory worldwide. The concept of "doing gender" was supported and confirmed during twenty years of intense sociological scrutiny and substantial cogent research. Not surprisingly, this concept became, and remains, immensely salient in sociology, gender studies, and feminist theory. Over the last eight years my research on "doing gender" has concentrated primarily on white working-class violent and non-violent teenage boys and girls (Messerschmidt, 2000, 2004). Through life-history interviews, I uncovered detailed accounts of gender interaction in three distinct "sites": the family, the school, and the peer group. This research validates the social processes involved in "doing gender." - Gender performativity (Wikipedia). - When Gender Isn't a Given (2004). - Building Boxes and Policing Boundaries: (De)Constructing Intersexuality, Transgender and Bisexuality (2008). - Dismantling the Gender Binary System (2009).
Out/Performing Our Selves: Sex, Gender and Cartesian Dualism (Wilton, 2000): Elements of feminist and queer theories and of phenomenology are used to engage with Cartesian dualism, in order to clarify the political implications of medicalized male-to-female (MTF) discourses. Particular attention is paid to descriptions of MTF as being in the `wrong' body. The author argues that this idea depends on a `shallow' model of corporeality, and suggests that a chronotopic model, by which the body is conceptualized as a process existing in both time and space, is more useful in counter-hegemonic theory. - Welcoming Dialogue: A Further Response to Out/Performing Our Selves (Hird, 2002).
Manning E (2009). Queerly Disrupting Methodology. Paper presented at the Celebrating Graduate Scholarship Conference, University of Victoria, Victoria, Canada. PDF Download. Download Page. Beginning:
Dichotomous thinking infuses numerous research methodologies, limiting
what is allowed to exist. These ways of thinking and being negate queer
existences because those who identify as queer live beyond the binaries
of sex, gender and sexuality. Thus, queer methodologies are vital for
exposing hegemonic linear ways of being and thinking that analyze,
categorize and psychiatrize those outside of such polarized identities.
My goal is not to delimit what a queer methodology is, but rather to
add to the discussion regarding ontology and epistemology and how this
may shift our gaze in a queer research inquiry. I argue queer
methodologies provide space for the multiplicity of strangeness to
exist as their disruption of normalcy and Otherness (Kumashiro 1999) is
explicitly political. Queer methodologies deconstruct truth claims,
question dualistic ontology and queer straight lines... Concluding: Although
I do not make the argument for a specific queer methodology, I wish to
contribute to the on-going conversation regarding queer methodologies.
It is imperative that the ontology of researcher and research project
question modernist ideas based on binary understandings. Embedded in
research methodologies and methods are dichotomies of all kinds:
homo/hetero, man/woman, female/male and insider/outsider, which need to
be problematized as they simplify and erase the plurality we exist in.
By deconstructing these binary notions, we call into being multiple
existences previously rendered deviant or invisible. Resisting
solidification of a queer approach to methodology is also important. By
allowing disorientation, contradiction and plurality to exist within
research, queer methodology remains reflexive through continually
challenging its own character.

This gender dualism is not only false and without any factual or scientific support, but also very harmful. One strategy to overcome this wrongness is the idea of androgyny, by which masculinity and femininity are not conceived as opposite ends of one spectrum, but as two separate spectrums: you can be or have both at once (or neither), not only the one or the other." - What is Gender? - Swinburne's Philosophy of Androgyny. - Androgyne: The Union of Opposites Within (Alternate Link). - The Amazon Connection. - Gender Gallery.

Building on Foucault's post-structural critique of sexual ideas and discourses, lesbian, gay, and feminist theorists have repeatedly contested the essential, intrinsic, or universal character of sexual identities." - Is Gender Identity Disorder in Children a Mental Disorder? (Sex Roles) "Because of flaws in the DSM-IV definition of mental disorder, and limitations of the current research base, there is insufficient evidence to make any conclusive statement regarding children who experience discomfort with their biological sex. those raised by the case of hermaphroditism, or intersexuality. By

Lost in Transition: Transgender People, Rights and HIV Vulnerability in the Asia-Pacific Region (2012): A study titled Lost in Transition: Transgender People, Rights and HIV Vulnerability in the Asia-Pacific Region [PDF Download. PDF Download.]
was released in Bangkok to mark the International Day Against
Homophobia and Transphobia. According to this research, which was
jointly released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and
the Asia Pacific Transgender Network (APTN), transgender persons are
among the most socially ostracized in this region and lack fundamental
rights, including basic access to health care and social protection
schemes. So there is need for concerted action by governments, civil
society, development partners and the transgender community itself to
design and conduct further research to fill the lack of information
about transgender people and their environments. The report seeks to
examine literature on laws, regulations, policies and practices that
prompt, reinforce, reflect or express stigma and prejudice towards
transgender people. It seeks to identify vulnerabilities to HIV and
barriers to access or uptake of HIV related healthcare services, and
attempts to establish a research agenda aimed at providing the sort of
data that will enable a reduction in future risk, as well as better
access to treatment, care and support for transgender people living with
HIV. According to Dr. Sam Winter from the University of Hong Kong, the
author of this report and a noted expert on the challenges of
transgender people, “For too long, trans people have been lost in
transition. Pushed to the social, economic and legal margins in a
majority of countries in this region, trans people often suffer from
poor emotional health and well-being. Many find themselves involved in
risky behaviours and situations, such as unsafe sex and involvement in
sex work. Social exclusion, poverty and HIV infection contribute to what
we call a ‘stigma-sickness slope’, a downward spiral that is difficult
to reverse. We hope that this report will demonstrate the burning need
to address a very human crisis, viewed through the prism of HIV, which
has taken a devastating toll on millions of our fellow citizens in our
region and beyond”.
Winter, Sam (2012). Lost in Transition: Transgender People, Rights and HIV Vulnerability in the Asia-Pacific Region. Bangkok, Thailand: United Nations Development Programme, UNDP Asia-Pacific Regional Centre. PDF Download. PDF Download.
The Asia-Pacific region is home to a large number of trans* people;
individuals whose gender identity, and/or expression of their gender,
differs from social norms related to their gender of birth.1 Across the
region it can be speculated that there are possibly 9-9.5 million trans*
people, though existing research is scattered and small-scale, and is
largely limited to trans* women.2 Asia-Pacific research, again scattered
and small-scale, indicates alarming numbers of trans* women are HIV
positive, with prevalence rates as high as 49 percent. There appear to
be no data at all on HIV rates among trans* men, an emerging identity
group. The number of trans* people of either gender who have died of
AIDS, or what proportion they represent of overall AIDS-related deaths,
is unknown. The regional HIV epidemic among trans* people is strongly
linked to stigma and prejudice. This review, focusing on the literature
post-2000, seeks to examine literature on laws, regulations, policies
and practices that prompt, reinforce, reflect or express stigma and
prejudice towards trans* people. It seeks to identify vulnerabilities to
HIV and barriers to access or uptake of HIV related healthcare
services, and attempts to establish a research agenda aimed at providing
the sort of data that will enable a reduction in future risk, as well
as better access to treatment, care and support for trans* people living
Chinese transsexuals gaining acceptance
(2004): Transsexuals such as Chen Lili, who hoped to compete in the
Chinese Miss Universe contest, are making gains against social
disapproval... Transsexuals have ceased to be taboo in urban China in
recent years, and a total of about 500 Chinese men have so far had their
sex changed surgically, according to statistics given by the country's
state media. Chen, who underwent a sex change in November, first began
attracting local attention as a hormone-taking transvestite singer in
China's southern Guangdong Province more than eight years ago... "In 10
years the most important thing I want to achieve is to keep myself
alive, to keep my life," she said, before laughing and claiming to be
joking. The thousands of dollars she has spent on her physical
transformation have come from singing. Despite offers, she has never
prostituted herself, she said. Chen and the Jiangsu Sirrim clinic have
also come to an agreement where she promises to do all media interviews
at the clinic in exchange for free surgical procedures. - China to regulate transsexual operations (2009).
Sex in China – The Third Sex, Transgender People Struggle
(2012): China has one of the largest populations of transgender people
in the world, it is estimated that over 400,000 people consider
themselves to be trapped in the body of the wrong gender. However many
of these individuals face an uphill struggle if they wish to undertake
surgery for sexual reassignment... In 2009, the government published
fairly stringent regulations for anyone hoping to have surgery – some of
these conditions seem reasonable given the severity of the surgery...
The main requirements of the policy are as follows:... So China isn’t
Thailand, and despite the fact that the country imports enormous numbers
of Thai transsexuals to work as show girls – Chinese transsexuals have a
much harder time being accepted into society... The final barrier to
many of China’s transsexuals is that of money, gender reassignment is
expensive (estimates are around 200,000 RMB) and many Chinese people
simply cannot afford to have an operation of this nature. In a country
where the average wage is 1,500 RMB a month, the average worker would
need to go without food, clothes, a place to live, etc. for 11 years to
be able to afford a sex change.
Malaysia transsexual who lost name fight dies (2011): A 25-year-old transsexual who lost a court battle in Muslim-majority Malaysia to change his name to that of a woman has died, a report citing heart problems said Sunday. On July 18, a high court in conservative eastern Terengganu state ruled that a person's sex was determined at birth so Ashraf Hafiz Abdul Aziz could not change the name on his identity card to that of a female. The Sunday Star newspaper said Ashraf was admitted to a hospital on Friday for low blood pressure and chest pains, having earlier suffered a bout of vomiting and dizzy spells. Ashraf, a former pharmaceutical assistant who underwent a full sex-change operation in neighboring Thailand in 2008, was born with an abnormally small penis, and died on Friday due to a heart problem, doctors said.- Malaysian transsexual vows to fight for her rights (2011). - Malaysian transgender singer fined for being ‘feminine’ (2012): Islamic court fines transgender woman after she ‘repents’ ...

Just before New Year's Eve, Vianna Faye Williams, a 36-year-old preoperative transsexual in Jersey City, N.J., was stabbed nine times in her back, neck, and chest. In January, Donald Fuller, an 18-year-old cross-dresser who went by the name Lauryn Paige, was found stabbed with his throat cut in a patch of woods in Austin. Gender outlaws (2005): Transgender prisoners face discrimination, harassment, and abuse above and beyond that of the traditional male and female prison population... “There were a lot of queens in jail,” Mahan mentions offhandedly. Transgender and gender-variant people, as a population, are incarcerated at even higher rates than the general population of African American men, although the majority of those incarcerated are also people of color. In San Francisco, a 1997 study conducted by the city’s Department of Public Health found that 67 percent of MTF respondents and 30 percent of FTM respondents had a history of incarceration. Almost a third of MTF respondents had been jailed in the past year. The numbers are staggering: among U.S. adults, only 3 percent are or have been incarcerated. Overall, “unless they’re rich, [most transgender people have] spent a little time in jail,” says Judy Greenspan.

Transgender and art in the school curriculum
(2006): The intention of this paper is two-fold. First, it makes
explicit a little known and poorly understood area of human experience:
transgender. Second, it explores curriculum possibilities opened up by
recent legitimating of transgender people through the Gender

the levelling gaze of citizenship, issues of gender identity can be
understood without censure through the visual arts. Moreover, the
visual arts offer a 'safe place' to discuss issues around the body
because they allow distance and, in offering visual representations
rather than text-based work, make visually concrete what science

Polari Journal: Special Issue - transVerse - Issue 4 October 2011. Download Page.
The purpose of this special issue of Polari Journal is to feature the
best in writing by transgender, transsexual, intersex, androgynous and
genderqueer writers, artists, activists and commentators as well as
writing by Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Queer writers that features trans
& intersex characters, lives, culture or issues. It is well
acknowledged that individuals living inbetween or outside the boundaries
of socially enforced gender norms struggle not only with day to day
living but with being able to speak openly about their experience. They
also struggle to be heard. Therefore, and in acknowledgement of the
courage displayed by gender non-normative individuals suggested by the
Feinberg quote above, this issue adopted an inclusive attitude with
regards to the selection of work. As a result, transVerse showcases
writing by professional authors and scholars as well as writing by
members of the trans and intersex communities who may not be
professional writers but who have come to use writing as a tool to
document, express and explore their personal experience of gender and
sex. This issue demonstrates the diversity of the trans and intersex
communtities and also reflects the differing degrees of engagement with
the practice of writing within those communities. Furthermore,
transVerse features work by established and emerging writers and
scholars as well as those who have put pen to paper (or cursor to
screen) only recently. We at Polari Journal feel that this brings a
richness to this special issue that is worth celebrating. We hope you
enjoy reading transVerse as much as we enjoyed creating it!

Exerpt: "In the nineteenth century, state and federal courts often had
to adjudicate racial identities. In the twentieth century, state and
federal courts sometimes had to adjudicate gender identities and in the
twenty-first century, state and federal courts continue to deal with
sexual identities. With regard to all three sets of identities,
however, courts have continually contradicted one another and
themselves. In this paper, I want to argue that they have had to do so
because racial, gender and sexual identities have no more than a
restricted scope..." PDF
