Robinson, Matthew P (2000). Unspoken Assumptions: A Cross-Cultural Examination of Sexual Abiguity. Lambda Alpha Journal, 30, 28-41. PDF Download.
This paper focuses on the issue of "sexually ambiguous" individuals -
that is, those who exhibit traits that are neither exclusively female
nor male - and the problems associated with their existence within a
sexually dimorphic cultural context. It examines studies that
investigate various innovations in Sambian, Indian, Navajo, Omani, and
Samoan cultures that actively incorporate sexual ambiguity into their
respective social and cultural systems. Specifically, it describes the
nature of the social interactions, cultural significance, and adaptive
strategies of these groups in relation to the respective cultural
frameworks within which they exist. Looking at cultures whose
constructions of sexuality acknowledge (and therefore legitimize) the
existence of sexual ambiguity with the incorporation of a third sex
class, this paper also discusses alternatives to the binary Western
model of human sexuality... With many heated debates currently
surrounding Western social policy issues such as civil rights
protections for sexually diverse peoples, samesex marriages, and
demographic reporting techniques such as the United States Census, the
study of sexual ambiguity is especially relevant. Considering
alternative models of sexual identity and classification provides us the
opportunities to reconsider the implications of differential treatment
towards sexually ambiguous and divergent peoples in Western society, to
reevaluate and potentially redefine Western cultural assumptions about
sexual "normalcy" and "deviance," and to renew our commitment to
embracing human diversity.
The binary gender: a constructed phenomenon. - What’s the big deal about gender? – Female Identity as Intersex
(2010): A U.N. report by Finnish international law professor and United
Nations Special Rapporteur, Martin Scheinin, says, “gender is not
synonymous with women, and, instead, encompasses the social
constructions that underlie how women’s and men’s roles, functions and
responsibilities, including in relation to sexual orientation and
gender identity, are understood.” The report stresses “gender is not
static; it is changeable over time and across contexts.” - New UN Report Pushes Gender as a Social Construct not Based in Nature (2009). - IWF in the News: UN Report Says 'Gender Is Not Static, It Is Changeable'. - The Report: Protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms while countering terrorism. - Transgender People Face Violence, Obstacles (2007).

"Although the concept of multiple
genders may seem alien to some cultures that lack the linguistic
capacity
to describe them, in many societies this is not the case. But are
gender
categories even necessary? Why must one become a fa'afafine in order to
perform "women's work"? What is "women's work"? "Men's work"? Are words
such as transgender, transsexual, transvestite, hermaphrodite and
berdache
accurate descriptions of who we are? Or are they just convenient (or in
some cases, derogatory) categories for containing the unknown?" -

everyone's a little bit of both. - Intersex: The space between the genders (2007):
The West defines gender in two distinct categories. But gender may be a
spectrum. Why does society, and even science, struggle to understand
and accept those who are somewhere between male and female?
Undoing Gender
(Deutsch, 2007): "Doing Gender," the groundbreaking article by Candace
West and Don Zimmerman, appeared in the first issue of Gender &
Society in 1987. Arguably one of the most important writings in the
contemporary study of gender, "Doing Gender" has been cited 634 times,
including 60 times in 2005 alone ... West and Zimmerman argued that
gender is not something we are, but something we do. Gender must be
continually socially reconstructed in light of "normative conceptions"
of men and women. People act with the awareness that they will be
judged according to what is deemed appropriate feminine or masculine
behavior. These normative conceptions of men and women vary across
time, ethnic group, and social situation, but the opportunity to behave
as manly men or womanly women is ubiquitous. Thus, gender is an ongoing
emergent aspect of social interaction... - An evolutionary perspective of sex-typed
toy preferences: pink, blue, and the brain (2003). - Was pink originally the color for boys and blue for girls? (2008). - Learning gender in primary school playgrounds: findings from the Tomboy Identities study (2006).
"Doing Gender": The impact and future of a salient sociological concept
(Messerschmidt, 2009): "Doing Gender" was one of the conceptual
breakthroughs that compellingly responded to this theoretical impasse
and considerably influenced feminist theory worldwide. The concept of
"doing gender" was supported and confirmed during twenty years of
intense sociological scrutiny and substantial cogent research. Not
surprisingly, this concept became, and remains, immensely salient in
sociology, gender studies, and feminist theory. Over the last eight
years my research on "doing gender" has concentrated primarily on white
working-class violent and non-violent teenage boys and girls
(Messerschmidt, 2000, 2004). Through life-history interviews, I
uncovered detailed accounts of gender interaction in three distinct
"sites": the family, the school, and the peer group. This research
validates the social processes involved in "doing gender." - Gender performativity (Wikipedia). - When Gender Isn't a Given (2004). - Building Boxes and Policing Boundaries: (De)Constructing Intersexuality, Transgender and Bisexuality (2008). - Dismantling the Gender Binary System (2009).
Out/Performing Our Selves: Sex, Gender and Cartesian
Dualism
(Wilton, 2000): Elements of feminist and queer theories and of
phenomenology are used to engage with Cartesian dualism, in order to
clarify the political implications of medicalized male-to-female (MTF)
discourses. Particular attention is paid to descriptions of MTF as
being in the `wrong' body. The author argues that this idea depends on
a `shallow' model of corporeality, and suggests that a chronotopic
model, by which the body is conceptualized as a process existing in
both time and space, is more useful in counter-hegemonic theory. - Welcoming Dialogue: A Further Response to Out/Performing Our Selves (Hird, 2002).
Manning E (2009). Queerly Disrupting Methodology. Paper presented at the Celebrating Graduate Scholarship Conference, University of Victoria, Victoria, Canada. PDF Download. Download Page. Beginning:
Dichotomous thinking infuses numerous research methodologies, limiting
what is allowed to exist. These ways of thinking and being negate queer
existences because those who identify as queer live beyond the binaries
of sex, gender and sexuality. Thus, queer methodologies are vital for
exposing hegemonic linear ways of being and thinking that analyze,
categorize and psychiatrize those outside of such polarized identities.
My goal is not to delimit what a queer methodology is, but rather to
add to the discussion regarding ontology and epistemology and how this
may shift our gaze in a queer research inquiry. I argue queer
methodologies provide space for the multiplicity of strangeness to
exist as their disruption of normalcy and Otherness (Kumashiro 1999) is
explicitly political. Queer methodologies deconstruct truth claims,
question dualistic ontology and queer straight lines... Concluding: Although
I do not make the argument for a specific queer methodology, I wish to
contribute to the on-going conversation regarding queer methodologies.
It is imperative that the ontology of researcher and research project
question modernist ideas based on binary understandings. Embedded in
research methodologies and methods are dichotomies of all kinds:
homo/hetero, man/woman, female/male and insider/outsider, which need to
be problematized as they simplify and erase the plurality we exist in.
By deconstructing these binary notions, we call into being multiple
existences previously rendered deviant or invisible. Resisting
solidification of a queer approach to methodology is also important. By
allowing disorientation, contradiction and plurality to exist within
research, queer methodology remains reflexive through continually
challenging its own character.

in Western Culture is the idea that there exist two separate and "opposite"
genders, masculinity and femininity. This gender dualism is not only false
and without any factual or scientific support, but also very harmful. One
strategy to overcome this wrongness is the idea of androgyny, by which
masculinity and femininity are not conceived as opposite ends of one spectrum,

and feminist theorists have repeatedly contested the essential, intrinsic,
or universal character of sexual identities." - Is
Gender Identity Disorder in Children a Mental Disorder? (Sex Roles)
"Because of flaws in the DSM-IV definition of mental disorder, and limitations
of the current research base, there is insufficient evidence to make any
conclusive statement regarding children who experience discomfort with

raised many more. But, perhaps the most interesting questions were
those raised by the case of hermaphroditism, or intersexuality. By

African American men, although the majority of those incarcerated are
also people of color. In San Francisco, a 1997 study conducted by the
city’s Department of Public Health found that 67 percent of MTF
respondents and 30 percent of FTM respondents had a history of
incarceration. Almost a third of MTF respondents had been jailed in the
past year. The numbers are staggering: among U.S. adults, only 3
percent are or have been incarcerated. Overall, “unless they’re rich,
[most transgender people have] spent a little time in jail,” says Judy
Greenspan.

Review For Three Films
(2009): The Aggressives. Directed by Daniel Peddle. Los Angeles:
Seventh Art Releasing, 2005. Black and White. Directed by Kirsty
MacDonald. New York: Women Make Movies, 2006. Boy I Am. Directed
by Sam Feder and Julie Hollar. New York: Women Make Movies, 2006...
Each film provides complex representations of the experiences of
gender-non-conforming, transgender, and intersex people in the United
States and globally. These films, when coupled with critical
writing can begin rich conversations for the feminist classroom
interested in interrogating the political, cultural, and visual
dynamics of gender. Far exceeding a “census model of gender
designation,” The Aggressives, Boy I Am, and Black and White offer
viable inroads to discussions on the varied landscape of gender as
lived practice.

My work emerges from a tradition of photographing transgender and
transsexual people, for example the work of Loren Cameron, Catherine
Opie, and Del LaGrace Volcano. However, I have moved beyond their
work, through a methodology that involves collaboration, empowering the
subject, and presenting the projection of the self from the
participant's point of view... My study explores the first adaptation of photo-elicitation to be
undertaken with transsexual people into their experiences of the
relationship between gender, self-image, the body, and the social
domain. This type of research in this kind of community has not been
previously undertaken...
Transgender and art in the school curriculum
(2006): The intention of this paper is two-fold. First, it makes
explicit a little known and poorly understood area of human experience:
transgender. Second, it explores curriculum possibilities opened up by
recent legitimating of transgender people through the Gender
Recognition Act (2004). The Act foregrounds the necessity for a forum
in schools to debate, reflect and understand the full implications of
changes to legislation. This paper proposes that, rather than
approaching transgender issues through biological science or through
the levelling gaze of citizenship, issues of gender identity can be
understood without censure through the visual arts. Moreover, the
visual arts offer a 'safe place' to discuss issues around the body
because they allow distance and, in offering visual representations
rather than text-based work, make visually concrete what science
ethically cannot.
