So, if discrimination related to sexual orientation is directly
connected to mental health problems for some MSM, then how well do
mental health services address this issue?... . Further some
participants were unable to disclose their sexuality in mental health
services even though they considered it central to their mental health
problems. This was the case for the two youngest men interviewed.
Daniel explained how a medical and symptom based approach was a barrier
to discussing his issues regarding his sexuality... They reported that
staff generally do not ask clients about sexual orientation and they
gave various reasons for this. One barrier to asking about sexuality is
the perceived dominance of the medical model... This focus on ‘mental
illness’ reduces the chance that staff may see conversations about
sexual orientation as important or relevant to their work. Instead, the
medical model requires them to focus primarily on symptoms and
diagnosis... Yet, homosexuality is marginalised, often remaining
unacknowledged. Thus, when homosexuality is omitted for MSM it is not
just their sexual behaviour that is ignored; rather, many other aspects
of their lives are also ignored such as their relationships, important
aspects of identity, and their experience of homonegative trauma...

Lesbian and bisexual women’s health research (Australia)
is a rapidly growing area. Small community-based research projects
involving these women have been underway since the 1980s. Increasingly,
over the last decade, larger population-based research has been
conducted. One of the current challenges is that questions on sexual
orientation and gender identity are not yet included in routine
demographics of most major national research and census data
collection. Their inclusion would provide important local information
about the health of same sex attracted women compared with their
heterosexual peers. Known completed projects and publications are
included here. There are many projects underway in Australia, which are
not yet included: Download Page For Many Documents & Reports.

and had to live on the street. When she turned her first trick she was
robbed and raped. Later, underground surgery, the equivalent of a botched

it her problem, or ours? Violence, A to Z..." - Queering

worse of both worlds (2 parts): "How would you feel if you'd grown
up thinking you were a girl and discovered at 20 that, genetically, you
were a man? ..But in the West since the 1950s, standard medical procedure
for treating children born with ambiguous genitalia has been to assign
them a gender quickly to avoid ridicule and rejection... Surgeons, geneticists,
endocrinologists and clinical psychologists form a team to decide, usually
within a few days, what sex the child is to be designated. The rationale
is that parents must be told as quickly as possible to prevent them from
rejecting the child. This medical response is based on the assumption that
normality is essential for parental and social acceptance and happiness."

alike” “they are all the same”. These themes were developed in more
depth in the interview to reveal institutional heterosexism and
structural barriers to teachers discourse on LGB pupils. The data was
organised into the following themes; ‘Gender roles and families’,
‘Moral Panic’, ‘Institutional heterosexism’. The study revealed that
whilst teachers aimed to treat all pupils alike they did so by treating
them as though they were heterosexual. As a consequence, teachers
seemed to lack the language to talk about different sexual
orientations..."

Status of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered Persons in Sociology (2002):
"At the request of the American Sociological Association (ASA), the
Committee on the Status of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered
(LGBT) Persons in Sociology conducted an investigation... First, while
graduate student responses to closed-ended questions reveal a moderate
degree of satisfaction with their graduate training and with the social
and academic culture of their program, open-ended responses suggest a
significant degree of academic and social isolation... Fourth, there
has been a significant increase in the visibility of LGBT scholarship
in the various professional outlets of the discipline since the early
1990s... As is the case for other marginalized groups who seek both
social recognition as well as opportunities to engage in scholarship
regarding the nature of the group, the status of LGBT persons in
sociology is complicated and in flux. On the one hand, LGBT scholarship
in its various forms is getting increased attention. On the other hand,
that attention is quite limited: relatively few papers appear to make
it into journals (see text Table below), journal publishing tends to be
limited to a few journals..." - Changing the Face of Medical Education to Improve Care to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, & Transgender Patients. - Readings on Lesbians, Gays and Bisexuals in Higher Education.

eating disorders, substance misuse, and breast and anal cancer. - Fear
and lack of knowledge by both providers and patients can lead to suboptimal
or no provision of health care. - Practitioners need to improve awareness
and take steps to create an open, nonhostile environment. - Community outreach,
education, and research are necessary to attain optimum health care for
this population.
