Semp D (2007). A Public Silence: Sexual Orientation and Mental Health Services (Word Download).  So, if discrimination related to sexual orientation is directly connected to mental health problems for some MSM, then how well do mental health services address this issue?... . Further some participants were unable to disclose their sexuality in mental health services even though they considered it central to their mental health problems. This was the case for the two youngest men interviewed. Daniel explained how a medical and symptom based approach was a barrier to discussing his issues regarding his sexuality... They reported that staff generally do not ask clients about sexual orientation and they gave various reasons for this. One barrier to asking about sexuality is the perceived dominance of the medical model...  This focus on ‘mental illness’ reduces the chance that staff may see conversations about sexual orientation as important or relevant to their work. Instead, the medical model requires them to focus primarily on symptoms and diagnosis... Yet, homosexuality is marginalised, often remaining unacknowledged. Thus, when homosexuality is omitted for MSM it is not just their sexual behaviour that is ignored; rather, many other aspects of their lives are also ignored such as their relationships, important aspects of identity, and their experience of homonegative trauma...

LGB people can also belong to black and ethnic minority communities and can experience homophobia within their own communities, as well as racism from the gay community. They may also experience racism and homophobia from health care practitioners. Discrimination acts as a barrier to full health inclusion and therefore measures to tackle racism should also include measures to tackle homophobia." - The importance of sexual orientation in the medical consultation

Gay life expectancy revisited: "The aim of our research was never to spread more homophobia, but to demonstrate to an international audience how the life expectancy of gay and bisexual men can be estimated from limited vital statistics data. In our paper, we demonstrated that in a major Canadian centre, life expectancy at age 20 years for gay and bisexual men is 8 to 21 years less than for all men. If the same pattern of mortality continued, we estimated that nearly half of gay and bisexual men currently aged 20 years would not reach their 65th birthday." - Does homosexual activity shorten life? Lesbian and bisexual women’s health research (Australia) is a rapidly growing area. Small community-based research projects involving these women have been underway since the 1980s. Increasingly, over the last decade, larger population-based research has been conducted. One of the current challenges is that questions on sexual orientation and gender identity are not yet included in routine demographics of most major national research and census data collection. Their inclusion would provide important local information about the health of same sex attracted women compared with their heterosexual peers. Known completed projects and publications are included here. There are many projects underway in Australia, which are not yet included: Download Page For Many Documents & Reports.

The Transgender Wars:
"The primary problem of transgendered people, and all those who don't fit the man/woman straitjacket, is not so much about accepting their identity, but about coping with how society violently enforces gender norms... Instead, her parents kicked her out of the house. She was thrown out of school, and had to live on the street. When she turned her first trick she was robbed and raped. Later, underground surgery, the equivalent of a botched backroom abortion, left her unable to breathe or talk properly.  Is it her problem, or ours?  Violence, A to Z..." - Queering Gender: Trans Liberation and Our Lesbigay Movements: presents some of the problems in GLB communities such as the existence of genderqueers, the tyranny of the gender binary, transphobia and related violence / abuses, biphobia, class factors, and related transcultural issues. - Transgender Asia (Sam Winter). - Transgender health Program. - Transgender Health Action Coalition. - An Overview of U.S. Trans Health Priorities: A Report by the Eliminating Disparities Working Group (PDF Download).

The tyranny of the gender binary - "There must only be two genders" and the harm done to all who are born inviolation violate socially learned beliefs - Sunday Times Magazine, October, 2001 - The worse of both worlds (2 parts): "How would you feel if you'd grown up thinking you were a girl and discovered at 20 that, genetically, you were a man? ..But in the West since the 1950s, standard medical procedure for treating children born with ambiguous genitalia has been to assign them a gender quickly to avoid ridicule and rejection... Surgeons, geneticists, endocrinologists and clinical psychologists form a team to decide, usually within a few days, what sex the child is to be designated. The rationale is that parents must be told as quickly as possible to prevent them from rejecting the child. This medical response is based on the assumption that normality is essential for parental and social acceptance and happiness."

Born into a culture that assumes everyone to be heterosexual, gay and lesbian youth often lack the acceptance, understanding and support their heterosexual peers receive. Society's ignorance and negative views of homosexuality leave many gay and lesbian youth feeling confused, ashamed, guilty, afraid and alone, placing them at greater risk for suicide, drug and alcohol abuse, homelessness, and sexually transmitted diseases." - Below the Gaydar: They're here. Young , gay and homeless with few places to turn for help (Boston): " They come from throughout New England and range from age 17-30. Outreach workers say that up to 60 percent of them are either gay, bisexual or questioning their sexual orientation. Social care providers estimate that between 5-20 percent of them are HIV-positive. Many have been kicked out of their homes because they are gay, only to find themselves trapped in life on the street where the only rules that apply are doing whatever it takes to survive: even if it means selling their bodies in order to do so. Often times, these street hustlers exchange sexual favors for drugs and alcohol..." - Young, gay and homeless, with few places to turn N/A (New York): "With just two dozen beds available for gay, lesbian and transgendered youth, they endure violence in the city's shelters, camp out in doorways in Harlem or pass the night at a 24-hour Internet café, where some trawl the Web for men who will pay for sex. ."You've got to do what you've got do to survive," says Murray, who has been a prostitute since he was 15... The number of homeless teenagers is growing, Siciliano says, inadvertently fueled by the identity-affirming pitch of gay rights advocates and the feel-good wit of television shows like "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" and "Will and Grace," which encourage adolescents to declare their sexuality to parents, who often respond by throwing them out..." - Young, Gay and Homeless. - Homeless Queer Youth: "Queer street youth may have difficulty accessing services to obtain food, shelter, social services and medical attention.  When they are able to access these services, many queer youth find that they do not adequately meet their needs.  Physicians, mental health professionals, and social workers often assume that the adolescents they work with are heterosexual.  Once a queer young person realizes that this assumption has been made, s/he is unlikely to reveal that s/he is gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender.  If the adolescent does not reveal her/his sexual orientation, service providers may be unable to accurately assess that individual’s needs and provide appropriate information and services." - Young, gay, homeless and invisible: a growing population?

Status of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered Persons in Sociology (2002):  "At the request of the American Sociological Association (ASA), the Committee on the Status of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered (LGBT) Persons in Sociology conducted an investigation... First, while graduate student responses to closed-ended questions reveal a moderate degree of satisfaction with their graduate training and with the social and academic culture of their program, open-ended responses suggest a significant degree of academic and social isolation... Fourth, there has been a significant increase in the visibility of LGBT scholarship in the various professional outlets of the discipline since the early 1990s... As is the case for other marginalized groups who seek both social recognition as well as opportunities to engage in scholarship regarding the nature of the group, the status of LGBT persons in sociology is complicated and in flux. On the one hand, LGBT scholarship in its various forms is getting increased attention. On the other hand, that attention is quite limited: relatively few papers appear to make it into journals (see text Table below), journal publishing tends to be limited to a few journals..."

Academic Searches: Search IngentaConnect: The most comprehensive collection of academic and professional publications. - Search Project Muse: Scholarly Journals Online. - Search JSTOR: The Scholarly Journal Archive. - Search The National Library of Medicine.

Search the QRD.Search all GLBT Resource Directories. - The "Proteus" Super-Search System is recommended (See also Proteus Original). - Best Search Engine on Proteus is: Google!  Why? If page link not available, it may still be at the same site but the name was changed. The "Google Scout" can then be used to supply you with the changed link. Also: "Gooooogle" and "Fast Search gives you an idea of the "context" in which the searched word(s) are to be found. If you are searching for a string of word together, such as a title, forget not to place what is sought in quotation marks. Example: "Death by Denial". Fast Search! is similar to Google.
